With Oracle’s acquisition of Sun customer’s can look forward to integrated machine & database engines like the new Exadata OLTP server with Sun FlashFire technology. The Exadata machine is massively scalable & highly perfomant and reduces Oracle licensing costs. Sun also still “arguably” has the best UNIX operating system out there in the form of Solaris. Their hardware platforms are very much in the ascendancy especially the co-developed M-Series servers which were jointly designed with Fujitsu. Their multi-thread technology has the ability to have an amazing amount of cores on one thread & is growing all the time at a phenomenally low price per buck and they now have finally seen the light an introduced a great X86 AMD & Intel range. Sun has also created a great file system ZFS (Zetabyte File System) which is bundled free in Solaris (you could save huge amounts on licensing costs). Sun have also finally got some really fantastic and innovative storage solutions with their “Thumper” box and new “Amber Road” storage solutions.
