The Sirius Data 1111 Challenge
Thursday, September 09, 2010FAQ’s
Q. Are Sirius Data Limited a Charity?
A. No. Sirius is an IT business, but we are providing the £1,111 to the fastest team for The Royal British Legion & £1,111 to Help for Heroes for the team who has raised the most money. We have also provided the marketing, trophies & other prizes including Skippers weekend away for the fastest individual.
Q. As part of a team of four do I have to do one element of the challenge or all of them?
A. EACH individual has to do ALL four elements of the challenge & then your times are added together to give you your team’s overall time.
Q. Do I or, my team have to raise £1,111 to be able to take part?
A. NO, NO & NO! Said three times to avoid any confusion. There are no MINIMUM levels of sponsorship needed to take part, but it would be nice if you could raise more than a penny each! There are also no entry fees which are sometimes associated with this type of event.
Q. What happens if I do not set the right “effort” levels?
A. Prior to commencing your challenge please ensure a moderator, time-keeper or gym instructor witnesses or sets your effort level otherwise you could run the risk of being disqualified even if it is a genuine mistake.
Q. Are non-members allowed to take part?
A. Yes, David Lloyd in Wooburn Green, High Wycombe have kindly made this event open to non-members, but you must comply with the Terms & Conditions & pass & sign the Health Assessment Waiver form prior to competing.
Q. Why do you need to know how much money is raised prior to event?
A. Because we need to know who has raised the most money in order to award them the donation to Help for Heroes/The Royal British Legion.
Q. Why is it just at David Lloyd, Glory Mill Lane, Wooburn Green, High Wycombe. HP10 0DB & no other gyms?
A. Because the kit has to be the same & the effort levels need to be calibrated to the same levels for this year’s event. Some gyms have different manufacturers equipment e.g. David Lloyd in Wooburn Green is mostly TechnoGymTM & David Lloyd in Maidenhead is mostly LifefitnessTM. The equipment at each maybe easier or harder depending on the make, model & age of equipment. In 2011 we will make the challenge so that other gyms can take part, but we also run out of time with the organisation of this year’s event.
Q. I am partially able bodied. Can I still take part?
A. Yes, so long as you comply with the Terms & Conditions & can still answer & pass the Health Assessment Waiver & sign it prior to commencing event.
Q. I am in the Armed Forces, but not a gym member - can I enter?
A. Yes, absolutely since this event is mostly about you & your colleagues at a time of Remembrance!
Q. Why have you recommended Just Giving & not some of the other online donation sites?
A. We have recommended http://www.justgiving.com because we wanted to try & get everybody or as many people as possible to make their donations or get their sponsorship from one place so it is frankly easier for us to monitor who is leading the challenge to raise the most money. However, although we are recommending this we are not affiliated to them & if you want to use other online sites such as
http://www.virginmoneygiving.com or http://www.bmycharity.com or others you can do so. Be nice if you could just let us know at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) your teams details and which one you are using to we can upload news about who is leading the field.
Q. Why do you not have one sponsorship form for both the charities? It is a little confusing having two.
A. Yes we agree it is a bit annoying this, but there is nothing we can do because of trademark & copyrights of the respective charities. Either pick one charity & fundraise for that one or make it clear that you are collecting for both & that you are splitting the donations equally.
Q. Why can’t you set up two or more charities under on-line giving sites?
A. Again rather annoyingly you can’t do this with any of the on-line giving sites currently. However, at least if you pick your charity as either The Royal British Legion or Help for Heroes you can then put in your introduction that you are raising money for more than one charity. You can also add in there that you are raising monies for other charities as well if you like including civilian ones, although this does complicate things i.e. you will need to set up separate Just Giving pages for each & then send the links to potential donors to pick the Just Giving Charity page they wish to donate against. See Just Giving’s FAQ on this:
“Can I create a page to raise money for more than one charity?
The way we process donations means it is not possible to link a Just Giving page to more than one charity. Because we want to give charities on Just Giving the best possible support, we place a lot of importance on making sure they receive donations as quickly as possible. So we process donations as soon as they’re made and we make sure the funds are with the charity within a week. To keep this super-duper efficiency as smooth as possible, we link each page to just one charity.
You are more than welcome to create as many pages as you like for the same event. If you make two or three pages, one for each charity, you can send the links to your potential donors and let them pick which charity they’d like to support or they could split their donation between the different pages - if you are really lucky, you might even get more donations that way!
Handy hint: in the Story bit of each page, include a link to any other pages you have, making it nice and easy for your donors to find them pages.”
Q. Why do you reserve the right to stop people from competing?
A. Predominantly to ensure the individuals or teams are fit & able to compete & that they have complied with the T’s & C’s or are not involved in external activities that could damage the integrity of this event or negatively impact on the event.
Q. Why must I read & comply with the Terms & Conditions?
A. You don’t have to, but if you want to take part you will have implicitly implied that you agree to them. Even though this is a charity event we want to ensure you & us & David Lloyd Ltd are protected. It is an unfortunate sign of the times that we live in such a litigious PC society.
Q. Why do I have to sign the Health Assessment Waiver form (Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire - PARQ)?
A. You don’t have to, but if you want to take part you do. It is to ensure you are healthy, fit & able to do the challenge especially considering there maybe many non-members taking part on the day.
Q. As a non-member can I use David Lloyd’s facilities to train for the event?
A. No. Unfortunately you will have to train at your normal gym or outside of a gym even if the equipment you use is slightly different.
Q. If some of my team are ill, injured or don’t turn up can I still compete for the prizes or will I be disqualified?
A. Yes, you can compete, but the following rules will apply: A) If there are 3 people then try & find a stand-in on the day. Failing this one of the competitors can do the challenge twice if they would choose to do this instead. B) If only 2 people turn up then those 2 people can either find stand-in’s on the day or, choose to do the event twice each. C) If only one person turns up they cannot be classed as a team & will therefore be disqualified from entering for the cash prize donations & the Skippers luxury weekend prize, unless they can find a suitable number of stand-ins to make up a team of four or, find at least one other person to do the challenge twice each with you.
Q. Can I enter event as an individual?
A. No. This 2010 event is team orientated. Next year we will probably have both.
Q. How can you have a fastest individual prize then?
A. The fastest individual will take part in a team of four, but as we will be recording times we will know who is fastest overall.
Q. What if there is a tie for the fastest time for the team or, individual prize.
A. In the event of a team tying their times the default winning team will be the one that has also raised the most money between the tied teams. Similarly, the same will apply to the individual award whereby if two or more individuals have the same times then the winning will be adjudged to have come from the team he/she represented who raised the most money.
Q. Why have you chosen The Royal British Legion & Help for Heroes & not other charities?
A. This is intended to be a yearly challenge around the time of Remembrance. Initially, we had it in mind to represent one Armed Services Charity & one Civilian charity, but it got complicated because some people wanted very much to represent Help for Heroes as well as The Royal British Legion so we decided that we would leave it to individual teams to decide whether they also want to represent anyone else, but the cash donations provided by Sirius Data Limited will only go to these two in 2010. In 2011 we have ideas to change & expand upon this. Also, Armed Services charities have informal agreements not to impact on the main fundraising activities of each other i.e. Remembrance Sunday & The Poppy Appeal are very much the initiatives of The Royal British Legion.
Q. Can a David Lloyd instructor be part of my team.
A. Yes.
Q. Can David Lloyd instructors enter as a team?
A. Yes, (but you still might have to beat the Gurkha’s or Para’s amongst others for the fastest time!)
Q. Can Sirius Data Limited still win these awards?
A. Yes, but we are unlikely to be the fastest team or have the fastest individual & by putting up these cash donations & prizes we are limiting our own capabilities to be the team who has raised the most money!
Q. Am I or my team eligible or allowed to win all the donations & prizes?
A. Yes. If you have the fastest team & have raised the most money & the fastest individual also comes from your team you win everything!
Q. Can the award of the donations be made to anyone outside of Help for Heroes & The Royal British Legion?
A. No.
Q. What if I choose to represent a Civilian charity as my main fundraising page & we end up raising the most money and/or have the fastest time?
A. Then you will win both the cash awards, but they will go to Help for Heroes & The Royal British Legion & not your main charity.
Q. Can the prize of the weekend away at Skippers via Boutique-Retreats be exchanged for cash or anything else.
A. No & see terms under T’s & C’s.
Q. What happens if so many teams enter that they cannot all compete on the Sunday?
A. We will review as we get nearer & potentially stagger times & start Challenge on Saturday 13th November or even from Thursday 11th if necessary.
Q. What happens to declaring how much you have raised prior to Sunday start time if teams are start times are staggered?
A. In the event of this happening we will choose to leave declaring how much monies have been raised to an hour after the challenge. Should it prove too difficult for whatever reason to collate this information, then we reserve the right to delay the award for the most money raised until we can be sure who the winner is.
Q. What happens in the event of equipment failure or a power-cut?
A. In the event of a power-cut or, equipment failing the moderator & time-keeper will note time & distance at the time of failure & re-set the clock to do the outstanding time or, distance for the remainder of the challenge or, give the team or individual the chance to re-do the challenge. If you are more tired or slower because of equipment failure & having to restart David Lloyd or Sirius cannot be held accountable or liable for this - this is after all supposed to be first & foremost a fun event that raises money for good causes.
